216 participates in a candlelight vigil Saturday at Grape Day Park in Escondido to call attention to the city's driver's license checkpoints. ESCONDIDO ---- About 200 people attended a candlelight vigil Saturday at Grape Day Park to protest the Escondido Police Department's use of driver's license checkpoints.

Rights activists, many from the Latino community, spoke out against the checkpoints, which they called unjust and a ploy to check immigration status.

"The intimidation has to stop ---- we all want peace," boomed the voice of Evi Quinn, a member of the Interfaith Committee for Worker Justice, as attendees held candles and formed a prayer circle in the park.

"There is no way we are going to stand by silently and not raise our voices for those who are oppressed," she said.

Escondido police say the checkpoints bolster traffic safety. They are not used to check immigration status, Escondido police Sgt. Doug Sams said.

"We do not do that," Sams added. "We are not immigration authorities. We don't care what their immigration status is. All we look for is their driver's license status and are they DUI drivers."

About 10 people held a counter-protest at the park.

Several were members of the Escondido Minuteman Brigade, an anti-illegal-immigrant group.

Despite a few heated words between the groups, there were no fights or arrests during the event, police said.

Who exactly is being opressed? You either have a valid driver's license or you don't.

Escondido apparently has a problem with the amount of illegals living in the vicinity.

Will there be a protest against the council approved ban on renting to illegals too?

Were people protesting the repeat criminal illegal alien sweep about a year ago?

As long as you are illegal and have committed a crime you're fair game to the local police. Perhaps which is why it was a DUI/license check?

My girlfriend was driving through Delaware in the middle of the afternoon with her 3 children in the car. Just this past summer. She got hit HARD at an intersection - side impact crash. The guy who hit her got out of his car and started to run. Two other motorists jumped out of their cars and sat on the ILLEGAL alien driving without a license and already had TWO, ount 'em...DOS DUI's. Guess what happened? Nothing. Prosecutor could have cared LESS. So who bought her a new car b/c her's was totaled? Her insurance company which drove up her rates...and the crap rolls down hill.

Did Escondido pass that ordinance that would inhibit illegals soliciting themselves for day-labor jobs?

Econdido was/is trying to be like Hazelton, Pa. Hopefully it works this time around.

There is an easy solution: be legal.

The courts have ruled plenty of times now that driver license and dui check points are legal.
Its called Starie Diecisis. Absent further compelling evidence to the contrary the established right of a municipality or law enforcement agency is well established.

Driving a motor vehicle is also a privilege granted by a state and to exercise that PRIVILEGE you must abide by the rules of the road (thats state traffic laws) which also include the request by a law enforcements officer to request your drivers license, registration and proof of insurance.

Failure to do that will most assuredly ruin your Saturday night and cost you a lot of money in bail, towing fees and generally getting to be in a cell with "Bubba" who asks you if you can squeal like a pig.............

Be very careful about quoting internet law to a law dawg at the check point.you will loose.

Just my two cents worth, and take care now

While you are intitled to your 2 cents worth, facts that can be proven you keep stating that their power is state authorized , granted it is but it also is no given power to violate some ones constitutional rights , that the differance and that how some people that are of a differant mind set are able to stay out of the jails , while others suffer fron the LEO's of this world, also internet law has nothing to do with it case law is the proof that supports my statements.

Why does this sound a lot like the claims no one has to pay taxes? The funny thing quite a few of those people who followed that advice paid a hefty price after the IRS settled up. Here is an original idea. Pay the fee to regester your vehicle, take the test and get your licence and insure your vehicle and you definetly won't have any problems. And if your an illegal get out of our country and submit the applications to enter legally.

The same goes for the so called registration on the vehicle , Don't need it and it is against your constitutional right to force you to contract with DMV. We hear so much about who got in during the elections just past. i worry if who ever got the job will support the constitution that they will be swaring an oath to uphold when they are in office And before you start laughin , I travel all over the US , no plates on the truck or trailer I get looks but haven't been stopped in 3 yrs. Do you know what you rights are??

I was under the impression that you do need such things to legally operate a vehicle.
Perhaps in your area the police dont mind but in America without plates, insurance, registration you are driving illegaly.

Some individuals read a book about how its unconstitutional to be forced to pay taxes, get a drivers licence register a car etc and think that they can beat the system. In reality it catches up with them and they pay through the nose in the end.
