Republic Services, Inc., a Texas waste management and collection firm, has agreed to cooperate with the federal government in its ongoing criminal investigation of immigration violations at the company’s Wilson Road facility in Houston.
The Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) first investigated the facility in November 2005 and found that approximately 25 percent of the employees were undocumented aliens. During a search in January 2007, ICE took 52 undocumented aliens into federal custody. Since that time, said Don DeGabrielle, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Texas, Republic has taken substantial steps to comply with immigration law, including terminating and/or disciplining responsible individuals, providing companywide training, continuing to retain immigration counsel, and implementing payroll software that includes I-9 compliance measures.
The recent agreement requires Republic to continue to adhere to its revised immigration compliance program and to pay $1 million to the U.S. Department of Treasury. In return, DeGabrielle’s office agreed not to criminally prosecute the company.

I think the fine was way too light. Someone should have made an example of this company and fined them out of their socks and probably into bankruptcy.

Agreed. In addition to higher fines the CEO's of these companies need to be lined up for a televised perp walk to jail.

$1 million to most companies is seen as just a "cost of doing business" and they will be right back at it again. Only the threat of criminal prosecutions and JAIL is going to deter CEOs from hiring illegal help. I know here in GA, the ICE will raid a business and take out 25 illegals and a year later raid the same place and find 25 more. While I support amnesty with conditions for the illegals who have been here 2 years or more, any amnesty must come with tougher laws and togher enforcement - fines should be incresed to $10 million and forfeiture of assets for a continuing criminal enterprise for repeat offenders. And management should be JAILED. After a few businesses are siezed and a few managers go to jail, the others will get the message that we ain't jackin around no more on this issue.
There cannot, will not be another Amnesty ever again. What we learned from the last one is that it opens up the Social Service network to millions of people and word travels fast as how to exploit it.
Does anyone REALLY think we don't have a big enough population here? Do we just keep stacking bodies into the US until we have the same fate as many African Countries with poverty and hunger?
The Govts of these Countries have got to get their populations stabilized so the Country can be self sufficient and quit relying on other Countries for welfare.
