These are just two articles I found within seconds on google. There are many many more, that cover these very same topics. It's not an opinion that illegal immigrants, even those in North Carolina, cost Americans (even North Carolinans) billions of doolars every year, and that they are straining multiple systems in our country, including health care and education....it's a documented fact. You can dispute it until you're blue, but you'll just continue to be wrong.
I hope this is not offensive as it is not meant to be. I am considering moving to Charlotte from Phoenix. I have seen our city of Phoenix over run with problems that involve illegal immigration. School, hospitals, gangs, violence increases, job loss, and return of diseases. What is the status of Charlotte's illegal immigration problem. I have read many articles that are somewhat negative regarding this and see a few areas and employers that cater directly to illegals is this true and if so what areas of Charlotte are effected? My husband is in law enforcement and I am a nurse, we are conservative and looking for a nice area to settle without going through the Phoenix ordeal again.
charhopeful....illegal aliens are a problem every where where ever it may be.
If two illegal aliens come to the US and have a child, the child is considered to be an American citizen because s/he was born here. If the parents (who, remember, are illegal aliens) have incomes below the cut-off limit for food stamps and welare, they can apply for welfare and food stamps, since their child is an American citizen. The worst part is, the laws stipulate that the government give enough food stamps for ALL THREE of the immediate family members of the legal resident, even though only one of them is truly a legal American citizen. That's for a family of three. Now, imagine all of the illegal immigrants who come here with 10 or 20 of their immediate family members, and have a child here.
There are multiple government and private-sector health care programs in place who provide free or very very low cost health care to illegal immigrants. It's not medicaid, but it works similarly...and it's only for those who are here illegally. Also, in most places, and especially border states, hospitals cannot refuse emergency health care, regardless of a person's ability to pay. So, hospitals are giving billions of dollars worth of health care to illegal immigrants who have not paid for their care, and who have no intention of ever paying for their care, which results in huge losses for the hospitals and medical providers. So much so, that many hospitals, especially in border states, are going bankrupt over this very problem.
That's true AOYAS. I worked as an Eligibility Worker with the Department of Social Services in Charlottesville, VA for three years and that's the way it is.
You are aware that not all illegal immigrants recieve government assistance and traffic drugs, correct? I agree with you on deporting drug traffickers, murderers, etc, but by the sounds of your post, I'm lead to believe that in your eyes, all illegal immigrants ('these people') are the same. Just checking.
If they weren't here, do you really think you'd be paying less in taxes? That's amusing.
I'd like to preface this post with the fact that I live in So. Cal. in an area that it 80% Hispanic. Hispanics are the majority in Los Angeles and many of the outlying areas. I worked for my local school district for 7 years serving this demographic. I speak Spanish.
Our taxes may not go down if the illegal immigrants were "rounded up and deported", but they might be put to better use serving the citizens/taxpayers of this country.
My husband is self employed and we spend $1200 a month on health ins. It burns me up to go to my children's pediatrician and even with health coverage we have to pay $300 for their immunizations. On may way out the dr.'s office I read a flyer that was posted (in Spanish) advertising "free immunizations for uninsured"... Hmmm, I wonder who they're targeting?
I don't want to make this a healthcare issue, but it's just one example of why US citizens are feeling marginalized in the face of the burgeoning illegal immigration problem.

Thanks for sharing your personel experience - this is definitely a serious issue.

You know, I mearly asked a question. I wasn't arguing this point because I already admitted I didn't know the answer to it.
Dawn
No, no that post wasn't directed at you at all! I know you said you didn't know the answer...the post I wrote before this one was directed towards you...the one where I wrote two paragraphs, one describing how illegal aliens can get welfare and food stamps, and the second describing how illegal aliens get free healthcare. I apologize if you thought I was directing this post to you. It was actually, indirectly, aimed towards ShannaCT, because s/he seems to think that the illegal immigration crisis in America (including North Carolina) is all in our heads, and is not a true problem that affects all of us in a multitude of ways. S/he seems to try to dispute what anyone says in this thread as our opinion, or as incorrect information. Sorry about the confusion!

The fact is that it IS a healthcare issue, and a housing issue, and an educational issue and everything else social. There is no reason in the world that illegal residents in this country should receive more than the citizens. And, the fact is they do.
