Washington, DC – Ranking Member Lamar Smith (R-TX) and 53 other Members of Congress sent a letter to President Obama today expressing their support for a broadly-applied 287(g) program. The letter comes just days after the Obama administration implemented limits on state and local law enforcement agencies who participate in the 287(g) program. The limits prevent state and local law enforcement officers from arresting many of the illegal immigrants with whom they come into contact.

“The Obama administration should not politicize this highly effective immigration enforcement and public safety program. Thanks to the 287(g) program, thousands of illegal immigrants that are identified in jails and through task force operations are being identified and deported."

“The open borders crowd doesn’t like the 287(g) program because it is working -- thousands of illegal immigrants are being identified and deported. It is so popular that the Department of Homeland Security rejected dozens of applications due to funding shortfalls in the last few years."

The county where I live is using 287g (started a year ago) and just voted yesterday to keep using it. WE HELPED to deport over 1,000 illegals last year and will do more this year.. You should have seen the illegal supporters screaming on the news......LOL

Wow!

10% of Congress support 287g. It's not even a party issue. Most police chiefs are against it as well.

Who cares what they have to say about this issue? What do they actually know when it comes to fighting crime?

Not to worry, there will be more. Remember, these crooks are up for reelection in 2010. They know who butters their bread -- and it isn’t ‘no vote’ illegal invaders.

All very true. That is why this is such a great issue for politicians to posture on. No downside really, since the illegals have no voting power.

This program is just one of the few working against illegal immigration. We need more.

Police who oppose it, oppose for obvious reasons.
