Here's a tip for scaring off evangelicals.

1. Start a sword/medieval weapon collection

2. Just happen to be polishing one when a duo of their gents answer the door.

3. Forget that it's in your hand and Swing open the door "Howdy, How can I help you today! Where you goin?"

You can actually live in North Peoria and still go to Dunlap schools. Most of North Peoria (the newer stuff) is part of Dunlap schools. We have a Dunlap address, but live in Peoria and go to Dunlap schools. Just tell your realtor you want to be in Dunlap schools, but still "in" Peoria (as opposed to way out in farm country). A really good subdivision to check out is Sommer Place. I think homes are going from the high 200's to the 600's. It's new with a nice park and lots of transplants. It actually has an Edwards address, but is in Peoria w/ Dunlap schools (is that confusing enough). Anywhere here you have high property tax, it's just how it is.

I live in one of the areas people often tout as being the "bible belt" and everyone "hates you" if you don't go to church. It's simply not true. It's just your typical (most likely extreme liberal) prejudice, I-only-agree-with-freedom-of-speech-as-long-as-you-agree-with-me religion haters.

I would recommend Dunlap. Good schools and from what my friend says, there is not a lot of "religious pressure" in the schools which is something she has experienced in other central IL areas.

My girlfriend's family lives in Dunlap. I can say pretty sure that that'd be a good fit.

If you REALLY want to cause a stir, move down here as an atheist (we're agnostic and still palpably feel like outsiders here...)

I live in one of the most conservative towns around Peoria and absolutely fit in with all types. The religious ostracizing thing is way overblown.

I have to admit the irony is pretty thick when I read about people worrying they'll be ostracized by the small minded rotten religious types. <ahem>

You can find small minded insular people in ANY type....indeed they may live closer to you than you think.

You should be fine. I can only think of one community outside of Peoria (Tremont) that is considered REALLY religious. I can say that because the people their are very straight forward about it. I would say that some of the older Tazewell County towns can be pretty conservative. But most of Peoria(city) is fairly 'live and let live.'

Thumbs up I wouldn't advertise it

The Peoria area is a bible belt community. Take the "don't ask, don't tell" approach and all will be well. I know there is an atheist meetup group in Bloomington, but there are none here. Most atheists aren't ostracized because they simply just don't let on.
You've got a valid question there.
