I just got a job at Cancer Treatment Center of America in Zion, Il and will be relocating there soon. From what I've looked up Zion doesn't seem to be the safest or best place to live. As a single woman I want to live somewhere halfway decent. I'm guessing I'll be able to afford an apartment in the 500-600 dollar range. Any suggestions?

Try North Chicago.

North Chicago is not uch better. If your max budget is $600/mo I would look for a roommate in someplace like Gurnee or Beach Park.

Like that's an improvement.

Anyway, to the OP: $500-600/mo is going to be very difficult to swing in anything but the most run-down areas up by there. You might try looking in Pleasant Prairie or Kenosha. Money seems to go a little further on the WI side of the border.

North Chicago is more crime ridden and run down than Zion and it will require more wasted time & gas to get up there as well. Not a good suggestion IMO. Zion itself should be alright, but I like Chet's suggestion of looking for deals just north of the state line.

Default Actually Drover suggested Cheeseland, but it is worth looking at...

Kenosha's water front is not quite as blighted as Waukegan or North Chicago and rents might be cheaper.

A roommate might be the best way to get a place under $600/ mo...

Just as an update....my max rent has gone up...I didn't realize yet how much I would be making. I will be able to afford about $900 a month for rent.

I would also look at Winthrop Harbor which is close to Cancer Treatment Center. Beach Park, Gurnee and Antioch are also good options. Certain parts of Zion (northwest side) and Waukegan (northeast side) may be relatively safe and affordable. I would avoid North Chicago.

With that budget, the only place to look is downtown Waukegan! One of the greatest of all places in Chicagoland for the young professional. Exciting arts, gourmet dining and world class shopping awaits you on the beautiful shores of Lake Michigan. And if you need more to do, Chicago is a quick train ride away!

Don't be a jerk.

OP, just so you know, this is not serious advice.
