It may seem a bit naive, but I've never used a moving company before, and I've made several cross-country moves. Now, we are being relocated by my husband's employer, so they're ponying up the moving cash. We don't have to choose a mover, as they have a contract with a certain company.

What I'm wondering is where do we go from here? We've begun to pack, and now are being told by some co-workers who have been through this that the movers will repack everything we've already done anyway.

Also, I'm finding out that on "long-distance" moves, we may have to share a truck with other families, and that delivery could take days. We're just moving from the Bloomington area to the Alton area, about a 2 1/2 hour drive. Is this a local move, or long-distance?

Anyone have any insight on this?

That is long-distance, but they should be able to give you a more accurate time than if you were moving to CA or NYC or something. I know they are doing the moving for you, but just see what they say in your contract. For really long-distance they may give you a few weeks in which they will deliver. For not so long, they may be able to tell you the day. I would just check with the company. Also, check with them on the packing. It may be included in the package or you may have to do it yourself. In sum, your best bet is to find out what company they are using and call. Good luck!

There is lots of good information on choosing a moving company on this site Moving: How to avoid Moving Company Scams We used it to move from new jersey to massachusetts 2 years ago. That move was about 3 1/2 hours. We paid for packup but we could have done it ourselves if we had wanted to. Packup was one day, pickup the next day and delivery to new home the next day.
