Hey everyone,

I can't find too much on Belleville, IL except for some pics and a "do not go there because you will get taxed like crazy" comments from somewhere on google, lol. I am possibly looking into a job here at a hospital, not sure what is going to happen but I just wanted to know how is the life there in regards to nightlife, kid friendly activities, daycare, schools, home prices, safety/crime and the ppl/future friends/networking? Thanks!

Let's get the taxes out of the way. All real estate taxes stay local to support: schools, hospitals, parks, city and county services and employees. The state Income Tax is a flat 5% whether you make $5 or $5M. Grocery tax is 1% excepting cigarettes, liquor, pet foods, and deli foods. Car license is $12?.00.

I lived there in the Ice Age. It wasn't terribly big, but it was an old German community with the beautiful old architecture and German food. Today its an All American City that has the Best Arts & Crafts Fair in America. Fischer's always had good food then. I don't know what their food today, but they still serve sandwiches that were popular in the 60s. There is probably 25 restaurants in the immediate area.

The last link reminds me that since Belleville is near the the Big Muddy and St Louis, the Mississippi River not only divides the Eastern and Western United States it also signals a change in TV and radio call letters. I don't know why.
1-Eastern (IL) station call letters begin with a W such as WGN in Chicago.
2-Western (CA) station call letters begin with a K such as KTLA in Las Angeles.

I think what you probably should know is IL is an Ag state. Most towns are surrounded by corn, soybeans and cows. Several miles separate towns not in a large metro area like St. Louis. Bellevue has a population of about 45,000. It is not far from St. Louis (Trader Joe's, Costco or Whole Foods). It is approximately 6-7 hours, or perhaps a little longer to drive from Bellevue to Chicago or KC, depending upon traffic and time of day. The City of St. Louis is about 1/3 the size of the City of Chicago. Belleville demographics are very similar to the national modal. Belleville (city) QuickFacts from the US Census Bureau

East St. Louis has a reputation. for gangs, etc.. It is not a place most people want to visit. .

Not really sure why anyone would need to drive to Kansas City from either town...

OK, let's make this perfectly clear for the OP. Belleville will be a culture shock. It is not tony Manhattan, and really neither is St.Louis or Chicago. You are not likely to have a high dollar income unless you have a doctorate. But the COL should be much lower than NYC. In the scheme of things you can probably find most of the items you like in St.Louis, or on-line. References to any other town is to give you an idea of how far apart different large towns are in the Midwest. I used St. Louis as a starting point.

So wait -- you're moving from NYC and worried about being taxed like crazy in Belleville?

If you find the taxes in Belleville a bit too steep, you can always look into the tax situation on the Missouri side of the river.

Nightlife -- you can always zip into STL for most of your nightlife needs.

Kid-friendly... Everyone seems to think O'Fallon (the one on the Illinois side) is the best place around there to raise kids. In fact that's where my sister lives, pretty much for that very reason.

Home prices: you can probably buy a starter house for about what you'd pay for a deeded parking space in Manhattan. 250K will buy you a lot of house in move-in condition with a lot of yard.
