Hi,

I am considering relocation to Illinois (Chicago) from Ontario (Toronto) and was wondering if my Ontario driver's licence is transferable to Illinois or will I have to re-do the driving tests?

Thanks,

I think it is a good assumption you will have to take the written and road test.

Look and see if you can find out on the website:

The Official Web site for Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White

You might want to give them a call too.

Before you take the test or can register a vehicel you need proof
Identification such as a birth certificate or passport
Illinois Vehicle Insurance
Illinois Utility bill in your name showing an Illinois address

You havae 30 days to register your vehicle.

Thanks for the link. I did check the website but unfortunately, it does not tell me if Illinois has a reciprocity agreemeent with Ontario.

Thanks,

I moved from ON to IL just 13 months ago!

Go to your local DMV, show them your Canadian licence and they will allow you to take only a written test. You will also need proof of residence (i.e. phone bill, gas bill etc) Once the test is completed, you will get your old ON licence back and get an IL licence. I hold both and intend to renew the ON just in case I ever have to go back!

Regards,

Charles.

If you need any other help, give me a holler!

I moved to IL about 11 years ago from the Western US.
The Illinois written test is embarrassingly easy to pass and you don't have to take a road test if you already have a valid driver's license.

Just FYI...make sure you get an emissions test when it's required and if you live in the Chicagoland area, that you get your city/village auto sticker ASAP.
The police tend to ticket sticker violators and the state will suspend your license (and occasionally not tell you) if you don't receive and pass your emissions test.

There are no emissions tests downstate, that was one thing I found wonderful when I moved to Champaign. No stupid "city sticker" and no emissions test to hassle with.
