Hello guys,

I was recently terminated from a job due to tardiness, I was fired due to my car being broke, but was on a final and the manager didnt excuse it as a reason. I am in the process of filing for UE benefits, now is there anything special I should or just follow directions. Im just lost. Thanks for any help.

You might not be eligible due to the reason. I would file online. The UI office is a madhouse.

The big distinction Illinois makes for UE is "gross misconduct" vs. "poor performance". Tardiness would fall under the "performance" scope, it seems. UE offices will generally ask for a termination letter, if your unemployment is due to firing (as opposed to a layoff). Read the letter; make sure the word "performance" is on there. If it is, your odds of getting UE are very good. If all it says is "tardiness", call the HR department. Ask them if its misconduct or performance, and see if they can mail you an amended letter. On the other hand, if your former employer says it's due to performance, whether to you or to the UE office, you're pretty much SOL.
