Anybody going to the total eclipse area ( near Makanda) the morning of the eclipse. We are coming from Memphis, TN and want to have an idea of congestion, etc in that area. Is Interstate 57 heading north usually not too crowded?
Thanks.

KM

After the eclipse, I heard the ride back to Chicago from down state Illinois was terrible. Interstate and highway traffic was backed up real bad and at times nobody was moving at all.

Indeed it was. My buddies and I left three hours or so after totality - we got lunch and explored Carbondale on foot for a while - to let the traffic die down, but I-70 was still bumper-to-bumper and not moving at all. We decided to take US and state highways north and check out Centralia (a town I'd always wanted to visit), but even then we got in a few pretty considerable traffic jams.

Googled the weather early AM for Makanda IL, said cloudy, so we changed plans to Hopkinsville KY. several other people in the field had also changed form Carbondale/Makanda to Hopkinsville because of the weather report. Found a great open area with lots of wonderful people at no charge. Woodstock atmosphere and very little traffic on the west side of Hopkinsville. The Nashville radio stations reported huge traffic congestion. Found out later that Makanda was clear. No problem, had a great view of the eclipse and a wonderful time. Hope to repeat in 7 years.
