Just because an area is highly populated doesn’t mean the townships have gone away. They may not function as a governmental unit, but they are still used in the legal description of land.
Correct. Also, many townships are responsible for the tax assessments and especially in more rural areas have responsibility for roadway maintenance and occasionally fire services.

(I was in Illinois municipal govt for a decade and collaborated with the township folks)

Illinois is notorious for having thousands of local government fiefdoms with complex, overlapping jurisdictions.

There still are over 1400 active townships in Illinois. While you may think of a "township" as a rural government unit, ~30 of those active townships are in densely populated Cook County where many of the high schools with "Township" in the name exist. Even in some places where the Township has been dissolved (like Evanston), the high school retains a name from a time when it served an actual township.
