Wallet Pop lists a Springfield neighborhood at 11th & Cook as the 13th of the 25 worst in the United States. The individual areas appear to be included in the article "Your Odds of Being a Victim".

The source of the compiled list was not immediately available, nor was it available in a cursory search at Wallet Pop. It made me a bit suspicious that the information taken in context is perhaps not as upsetting as first thought. I invite the site visitor to read the entire article to learn what data was used, the criteria for the study, and how the results were developed.

Can the City of Springfield do better? Of course, but so can avery other American city. Politics aside, I personally hope I never see our state capitol mentioned in this type of study again.

Geeze....I could name a few other Springfield sites which would be considered more dangerous. This address is considered in the black district and I'm sure some crime has occurred, but I wouldn't be afraid to stand on the corner of 11th and Cook at nighttime. There is a bar on the corner but not much else that would be considered dangerous. I wonder if the police had a lot of calls to disturbances at the bar. Also if you go to the site where you look at the information, it's a realtor type site.....probably not a lot of people would want to buy in this neighborhood if they didn't know Springfield and the area.

However, there are a couple of neighborhoods I probably wouldn't go to at night, although my husband has an early morning route all through the worst of the worst of the eastside neighborhoods and he has never been bothered.

One of the neighborhoods I would consider worse is south off Cook, but is closer to about 25th or 26th street (can't remember the cross street).... orginally named Evergreen Terrace I think. There have been many people shot in this neighborhood during drive by shootings. (The Simpsons used to refer to Evergreen Terrace in Springfield). I think it might be called Brandon Court now. For fun do a search of Brandon Court, Springfield, IL and see if you pull up some crime....I did when I did a search.

I would say Springfield has its ups and downs....good neighborhoods and bad but I don't agree with this ranking as in the top 25.......I used to travel with my job and I saw a lot worse!!!! All over the United States. I personally don't think that the eastside of Springfield is the worst in the world....although another poster once told me it was.

Just speaking out! My opinion only of course.

I would say that a vast majority of Springfield is safe. Overall, the east side has its share of crime and violence and other parts of the city have isolated incidents. But if you stay out of the worst neighborhoods, you will have little to worry about in Springfield.

This is what I figured. Considering that central Illinois has three very large communities, I find it somewhat peculiar that any neighborhood in Springfield is singled out. Not to get off topic too far, but Peoria had that problem in a couple of neighborhoods. The city condemned every building and razed about 12 blocks. One area has a sports center and the other the medical school. That was one of the plans that worked pretty good, but it takes a lot of planning and money to do it.

That's not a great area, but it's ridiculous to think that it's one of the most dangerous IN AMERICA. Springfield has a couple of bad areas, but, if you stay out of those areas, it's a very safe place to work and live.

What a strange turn of events. I just looked at an MSNBC post of 100 top places to live and Springfield is certainly on the list? I would be you can't find two lists that agree.
