Thank you IL for ending horse slaughter in this state. Just one more signature from the governer who plans to sign this bill into law and the horse slaughterhouse will be shut down.

Shouldn't this be in the Politics forum?

Question ? Politics, horses aren't politicians

I don't understand why this would not belong in the suburban IL forum, after all DeKalb, IL was the last operating horse slaughterhouse in the nation, not exactly something to be proud of. Horses have no politics, they are animals, humans have the politics and this is very much a suburban IL issue. Why are you nitpicking?

This belongs here, it's a suburban IL story but it's also an American story, an animal lovers story, a horse lovers story and more.

Thanks Nanannie,

I have a Yahoo Group removed for anyone who wants to help continue this. It's strictly for those who oppose horse slaughter, not a debate forum.

The governer hasn't signed the bill yet but he's vowed to do so. Likewise the slaughterhouse has vowed to fight the legislation.

Good! I saw this on the news the other night and was quite happy! My wife is a huge horse lover, this news made her over-giddy.

Then you might want to look into the truth of the matter. Horses that are slaughtered were old, abandoned, ill, or otherwise "Un-wanted". Horses of "value" are too expensive and the slaughterhouses didn't pay much.

KY and TN are having real problems with all the abandoned horses simply being set free in the woods to die from starvation, car collissions etc...

Horses are not wild animals. When horses get old, sick or can no longer "worK' they become a burden and are often left to die.

Seems like a real good story was on NPR - so you might want to look there.

Maybe I'm dumb or something... but how is slaughtering horses different from slaughering cows? Esp. under circumstances that Dad of 3 Girls stated? Are we saying that horses are pets vs. livestock? And what are we supposed to do with them when they are at the end of their lives or unwanted? I am thinking that dogs are euthanized... no I don't get a warm fuzzy feeling about that either.. just thinking...
I kind of think this goes in the politics forum, too as I don't think "the world" will agree on all of this.

I am a horse owner and agree that ending horse slaughter is bad for the industry. What are we to do with horses that are unfit to use because they are old or unsafe? I guess I'll just drop mine at the local human society and let it be their problem!

Better yet, maybe you can drop it off at the front doorstep of someone who pushed for this ban because it offends their moral aesthetics without really giving much thought to the consequences.
