I just wanted to let everyone know that I was outside today .. me on my scotter, my 3 year old on his trike and I kept hearing this warbling sound coming from all over. Then I realized that Columbus is on the migratory path of the sandhill crane and guess what, they are here! It's really cool! I wish I could see them to take pictures, but I know I should just let them be. They sound beautiful though.

Ah, the Sandhill Cranes
I remember seeing some when I went to the Japser/Pulaski National Wildlife Refuge when I lived in NW Indiana. The Sandhill cranes prefer the marshy areas that feature some standing water during the cooler months.

It was amazing, all day I could hear them. I hope they're still here tomorrow.

Saw/heard them all day over Tipton Lakes while working in the yard. Beautiful sight against the azure sky ... Should have broken out the Nikon and long lens, but it does not play well in the dirt !

When I had the kids outside all afternoon yesterday ... what a day ... I saw various groups of cranes leaving Columbus for points north. I'd imagine they are in Jasper county by now.

These are pretty bad pictures, but when I was working out in the yard today, I kept hearing this warbling sound. A few minutes later, I looked up and saw the cranes leaving town.

Again, bad pics, but here they are:

That's what they are. I knew they were a type of Crane, I remember the story a few years back. They seem to have grown in population.

before we moved to Missouri from Steuben County there were Sandhill Cranes that would land in the farmers field next to our place. They were noisy but it was a wonderful site.
There were also lots of geese and ducks that would land there by his pond also. Most days there were more birds than there were cattle.

Default Sandhill Cranes

I live in South Bend Indiana and yesterday I was on highway 8 between HIghways 35 and 39 south of LaPorte, Indiana. This is close to the Kankakee River. I noticed some birds off on the north side of the road in a field. When I got a better view I saw literally thousands of sandhill cranes standing in the field. It was an awesome sight. I've never seen that many birds in one spot before. The road is fairly quiet and you could hear them calling. Everyone once in a while some of them would take flight and move to a slightly different spot. It was one of those rare moments that sometimes you're lucky enough to glimpse.

The cranes were really confused this year with the wacky weather. Last year, it was a pretty uniform migration, but this year, they've been staggered because it's warm one day and then it's freezing, so they go back south. I've been hearing and seeing the cranes coming in and out of Columbus for 2 weeks now. Before, it was all done in a week.

Poor things ....
