With the direction this country is headed, I figured I should probably start going off the grid. Is Indiana a good state to go off-grid (specifically Southern Indiana)?

You've posted this similar question multiple times and received multiple responses.

My answer: no. And again, southern Indiana will not meet the weather and other criteria you said you wanted: little snow and humid summers.

Southern IN is pretty remote, no major cities, and not a lot of reasons to be there. Sure.

Southern Indiana is not remote by any stretch of the imagination. Remote is being hours away from a town or city. In Indiana you can be in a town of some size in 30-45 minutes. Arizona has remote areas. Montana has remote areas. Alaska has remote areas. Indiana does not.

One measure of remote is light pollution. More light at night equals more people equals less remote.

Southern Indiana is not remote or isolated. Try the interior of Maine. Avoid the coast.

I am thinking of any areas of significance. No, IN isn't remote compared to the Mountain West or something like interior Maine. Southern IN is remote compared to many metro areas of the country, while still being within a day of access to them.

I'd say places like Patoka Lake and much of the Hoosier National Forest are pretty remote for this part of the country. So what it isn't central Maine?

Being "off grid" is not necessarily the same thing as being remote and vice versa...just sayin'.

What's your definition of it OP?

I read a few of your posts in other threads, OP.
  • Indiana is humid--like most of the country east of the Mississippi.
  • West Virginia is very religious, if the number of religious radio stations and amount of religious programming on TV in Fayette County are any indication. It's also very poor, has the least educated population, and is seeing a loss of population.
Try posting your question in the self-sufficiency forum--people there can better help you find a location.

As to the direction the country is headed: we've been through many crises in my lifetime. I can't think of any of them, including the current one, where being without utilities and in a location with few opportunities would have improved someone's circumstances.
