I've seen many stats saying Bloomington has a way-above average poverty rate. Is this because of all the students - or is it high for locals too? What is the underlying cause?

College towns always generally have an elevated poverty rate because students are often counted as residents of the area for census population counts. West Lafayette is the same as Bloomington in this regard.

Last time I was in Bloomington, I asked: "Where did all the poor people go?"

When I was growing up there was a pocket of white poverty in the area around Grimes Lane. That area seems to have gentrified now.

So, where DID all the poor people go? Did they get booted out to other towns? Are they in apartments or subsidized housing? Are there no in-town poor families anymore?
