My boss approached me this morning about a 2 and 1/2 month job we have going on in the Bloomington area. He wants an answer tomorrow as to if I will go. Me, ex NY-er, current Californian. Getting married in October. I really don't care to go because I don't want to be so far from my other half for so long, but am really sick of the rat race in California. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Is there a chance it could be permanent? If you are looking for a slower paced life, I'm sure you will like Bloomington. Is your wife working right now? If not, why not have her go with you? You should be able to find a suite hotel within a decent driving distance to Bloomington, so you can cook your own meals and save a few bucks. I did some temp duty last summer and I took my whole family. I worked my tail off, but the wife and kids had a really nice tan by the end of the summer.

Word of caution though, if your wife doesn't like cold weather, it's going to be cold in Indiana for a while.

When would you be coming? Bloomington in the spring and summer are very nice. The winter has been more wet than icy. It's 2.5 months ... not even 90 days. It's like a field trip ... you'll go back home right?

It's not bad here, seriously!

I would be there till the end of March. Another guy went to do the work which involves climbing 300 foot wind towers to inspect them, in which he cannot do. 58 and a heavy smoker. So they enlist the 30 year old!! My wife to be would stay here in CA while I'm gone. Definitely not permanent. Just for 2 and 1/2 months. Personally I don't mind the cold. Living in the Upstate NY snowbelt for 25 years of my life conditioned me.

Rent "Breaking Away"

That's what I did before we made the move.

Like the others said "you can do anything for 2.5 months".

Spring in the Midwest is lovely. Bloomington has all the amenities of an American college town. If you like bookstores, coffee houses, hiking in the woods and/or cycling you'll be fine.

Breaking Away is one of my all time favorites too. Odd thing is I've never been to Bloomington. Been to Indy, Cincy, Louisville, St Louis, but not Bloomington. How are the roads in and around town for pedaling around? Enough width for a bicycle on the side of the traffic lanes so I don't feel like the cars are scraping past my left elbow? I like to use a bicycle for general transportation in town and for exploring surrounding towns and countryside and Bloomington seems like a nice place for that.

You'll see cyclists all over Bloomington any day of the year. There are some students who come here just so they can participate in the Little 5.

Come on down cord!

Thanks for all the responses, but I declined the work this morning and my boss was cool about it. After just getting engaged and already spent the summer and fall last year away from home for work, I am just not eager to do it anytime soon. Even if it is a nice place as Bloomington sounds.

Default Riding in Indiana

Recycled--
You might want to check out the Bloomington Bicycle Club for more info on riding in Bloomington, plus group rides and route info. If you are a "touring" rider I have heard nothing but praise for the TRIRI rides this group promotes.

Riding in town in Bloomington is like riding in pretty much any college town in the US: Crowded, with young, unskilled drivers to dodge , but you'll see plenty of commuters.

The backroads of rural Southern Indiana are a cyclist's dream. I was not a "roadie" really (more of a mtber) until I moved here. The roads are narrow and twisty and hilly...and they have no shoulders! That was freaky to this Western gal at first. But I rode with groups and got to know which roads to avoid. The beauty is low-traffic and (mostly) polite drivers. I can pedal out of town in ~15 minutes (I'm in Columbus) and do a 75 mile hilly loop and, on a weekday, encounter maybe 5-10 cars. Talk about bliss!
