I'm 20 years old and I'm looking to move to Indianapolis. I'm into art and music and skateboarding. I wont be going to school right away. i want a relatively cheap 2 bedroom apartment in a relatively safe neighborhood, close to downtown and the nightlife. what are some good neighborhoods for me? I think i could spend about 800 a month for rent. thanks

broad ripple is def the place you want to be if you are 20 and looking for fun. also do some craigslist searching as well as rent.com to find the best deals. sometimes you can find a cute cheap two bedroom buglow for 500 a month

$800 a month should give you a fair amount of flexibility. The Chatham Arch neighborhood closer to downtown has nightlife on Massachusetts Avenue. It'll probably be comparable in price to Broad Ripple--perhaps a little bit more. The nightlife there has a very different character--much more yuppie, whereas Broad Ripple (particularly along Broad Ripple Avenue) tends to have more a fraternity/meat-market atmosphere. Outside of BR Avenue, the rest of the character of Broad Ripple is more like a college town.

Depending on your interests, you might also check Fountain Square, which is probably the biggest hipster neighborhood. It has higher crime and poverty than the other two but is definitely on the up-swing. The nightlife isn't huge yet but it's on the rise, and the retail in the area would probably be more "edgy". Lots of support for the arts--lots of galleries--and good live music venues there. It would probably be cheaper than Chatham Arch or Broad Ripple.
