We have an enormous amount of affordable apartments going into downtown (which is low crime)Indy but the school system is still problematic. It has some great magnet schools and programs but appears lottery and applying by certain dates (meaning parents have to be in the know and lucky) apply.

It appears the apartments are mostly directed to adults even though they are in some cases, multiple bedrooms, due to the locations. Not many kids downtown.

What do you mean by low income housing? We really need to identify this before going much farther.

Low income housing in the traditional form really doesn't exist in indianapolis. There are places that go by income and u could possibly get a section 8 voucher but it is about a 2 year waiting period but sometimes people get lucky. Best bet search for places that go by income. Keep in mind for the safer areas u will have to pay more so it is better coming in with employment already lined up.

I don't mean to be snide, but low income housing and very low crime area? Come on, let's be realistic here...that's just not the way the cookie crumbles.

Most Section 8 apartments scattered throughout the city range from crime levels above the citywide average to absolutely awful places. None with low crime.

As sweetana3 says, the affordable downtown apartments are the best bet, since downtown is low crime--not VERY low crime, but low in comparison to pretty much any other low-income areas. Many of the older apartment buildings are targeted toward seniors, and the newer ones going up simply target working people of moderate incomes. But "moderate" is usually higher than "low".

Noblesville, Greenwood, maybe Plainfield, Avon, Greenfield may have apartment complexes that are partially Section 8, if that is what you are talking about. As far as "low crime," low income usually means higher than average crime, so I think you will get better crime in lower income areas in the burbs than you would in the city.
