I'm pretty sure I said, "Carmel has diversity". I wasn't arguing that it was more or less diverse than anywhere else. I'm saying it was an accepting school that was open to diversity.

Thanks for your advice!
Zionsville is a bit closer in, but smaller and considerably more expensive than Fishers. I'm not sure there would be much to rent there either, it seems far less transient than Fishers.

The main loop around in the city (465) is often very slow at the main congestion points (I465/69 interchange is one) during rush hour. Lots of other folks are going the same way you are, so it's going to be slow.

It's going to be difficult to keep your commute to IUPUI under 40 minutes from any of the northern suburbs outside of Zionsville. With a straight shot down 65 from Zionsville to the west side of downtown that's hands-down the easiest commute, but as others have said it tends to be more expensive than all the others and probably with fewer rental options. It's probably not as diverse as Carmel or Fishers, either.

If admission into Herron is an option I'd definitely recommend going that route both for the academic side of things as well as keeping your sanity during your commute. Butler-Tarkington & Meridian-Kessler should provide some nice options in that price range.

I know folks with kids at Herron, Shortridge (IPS magnet IB world school that used to be housed at Gambold), and Arsenal Tech (normal IPS high school).

Herron is opening a second location, I don't know if they have decided where. I would imagine it is way to late in the game to get in now. Same with Shortridge, which is another good choice for city schools. Irvington Community Schools have a high school on the east side, they have good rep, though is not a known name across the city the way Herron is.

Thanks for all of the good advice on the neighborhoods and schools. You've all given me some good homework! I looked into Herron and the open enrollment starts in November, so we can try that route for 9th grade.

I'm definitely open to living in Indianapolis, so also appreciate hearing about those neighborhoods. I'm researching Butler Tarkington and Meridian Kessler, but are there other areas I might want to add to that list?

Thanks!

I would look into Washington Township in general. It's a more affluent area on the northside bordering the suburbs.

With 30-40 minute commute, if you'll be commuting during rush hour, Fishers and Noblesville are ruled out and possibly Carmel. Zionsville is possible but like someone else posted, I don't think there are many places to rent there and it's possibly the most expensive area to live in the metro. Others have mentioned good neighborhoods. You could also look on the west side. Plainfield and Avon are good areas as is Brownsburg though it's more removed. The south side, especially Center Grove, is a great area, too. Center Grove schools can easily rival the northern suburb schools. Those areas should all be within the 30-40 minute commute criteria.
