The only reason I don't live there is because among the houses I looked at when I was buying, I liked a house in Little Flower the best.

Check out Main Street on the Monon apartments in Carmel. Straight shot down Main St to 31 to head downtown, next to Meadowlark Park, next to Monon Trail (walking, biking) and Carmel Arts District (restaurants, shops, ect).

On my list to check out during a visit next week are:
-Avon/Brownsburg
-Carmel/Fishers
-Irvington
-Greenfield (Tacked this one on here because prices seem really affordable. The commute appears to be around 25 minutes, and I read this route doesn't get traffic like the northern suburbs - true? Have found a few homes right off I-70 that appear walkable to some amenities/lake/park. Schools iffy though..).

Any place I might be missing?

I don't think you'll get downtown from Greenfield through rush hour traffic, get parked, and get to the office in 25 minutes. I think it used to take me about 20 minutes to drive to work downtown--and I live west of Irvington. Sometimes I take I-70 eastbound in the morning, and I usually see quite a bit of traffic (by Indy standards) heading downtown.

That brings up something else about working downtown: the time and money to park. There are $5 lots, but they're a bit of a walk from, say, Monument Circle. The lots and garages right downtown are $20. I took the #10 bus to work; the #8 bus goes along Washington (through Irvington, downtown, and out to the airport). Bus fare is $1.75 each way, or $60 a month for a pass.

Work location is the 700 block of E Washington St - is that considered part of "downtown" Indianapolis? It appears to be right off the interstate without much surface street driving. By the looks of the Google Maps, it appears as they though they have their own private parking lot, but we'll be double checking that next week, thanks for the heads up!

It's close enough . I didn't work in that particular area, so I'm not familiar with it. If you take a Google street view "drive" around there and compare with 2007, you can see how much the area has improved.

Other random question I thought of -- how often do the icy road conditions that caused major issues in mid December occur? Saw some news stories about it, and it's really got me concerned how far I want to live from husband's work if icy roads are a regular worry.

700 block of East Washington is the Salvation Army and whatever that building across the street is. I believe both have their own lots.

That was a very rare event. However, anytime it snows it can cause issues. I remember one winter snow and ice caused I-465 on the northside between US31 and I-69 to be shut down during the afternoon rush hour. That was not pretty for the already jammed surface streets on the north side. Again, snowy commutes of course happen and my 35 minute drive from Fishers to Carmel on non-interstate roads often jumps to 45-50 minutes when it is snowy. But that's maybe a handful of days of the year in a typical winter. Last year I only remember two snowy drives and one wasn't terrible.

Along with this, you also aren't going to get downtown from Carmel or Fishers in 25 minutes during rush hour either.
