Are there a lot of tornadoes? Can someone fill me on on this type of weather, anyone that lives there? Are there a lot of tornadoes or just some small ones...and what damage is typically caused?

We had a pretty bad storm come through Avon a couple months ago that had straight-line winds and caused quite a bit of damage. A lot of people have new roofs now

It isn't too bad, but we do get them. It is a good idea to have a weather radio, we dig ours out every spring. This is the worst time for the storms. I have never personally suffered any damages, except in that storm I just mentioned, my BBQ grill was blown half-way to my neighbor's house.

Please don't get too caught up in tornado worries. No, there are not alot of tornadoes. People who have never lived here think it's much worse than what it really is. I lived in Avon/Plainfield for the past 10 years & although there have been some close calls, only 1 time did we feel a need to go to our basement. I grew up in Southern Indiana, where there is more prevalance of tornados. In 1990, we had a tornado go right down main street of my hometown. It destroyed 90% of the town. My dad owned a car dealership & although the building was spared, I remember having to drive cars off the lot with the windshields blown out & 1 had a stop-sign impaled in front seat. It was something I will never forget. That being said, it was just the kick in the butt my little sleepy town needed because it was brought back, better than before. I guess that's a positive way of looking at it. My folks (still in Southern Indiana) had another one touch down about a 1/2 mile from their house. It's just one of those things.

No matter where you live in the USA, you will have to deal with mother natures fury- whether it be Tornadoes, Hurricanes, Drought, Mudslides or Earthquakes.

Avon/Indy is a great place to live. Don't let a fear of tornadoes stop you from coming here

Don't listen to anything anyone tells you. There are tornadoes every week and we take cover in fear for our lives at least once a week, sometimes more. I mean just last night, there was a tornado barreling toward my house, it was terrifying. I have had to replace my house 3 times over the last five years because of tornadoes! It is ridiculous, seems everyone I know has been effected by a tornado recently. Of course, the weather radio never works and the weather people act like the weather is fine, but tornadoes are everywhere!!

What I always tell people who wonder about tornados is that the issue shouldn't preclude you from choosing to live in Indiana. We aren't the worst state for twisters. Getcha a house with a basement and a weather radio.
