I currently live on the southside, Keystone and Thompson area, but I want to purchase a home in the near future.

The southside is ok. Everything is fairly convenient, I feel fairly safe as one can feel in America, and my commute to work (Plainfield, IN) doesn't bother me.

Ideally I would like to live out in Hendricks county, but generally houses are more expensive. Southside (including SW and SE) are on my list for when I start house hunting, but I'm curious what differences would I find if I lived on the NW, N, or even the East side?

I've explored Indy a little, and the Eastside doesn't look to good except maybe Irvington. Its also a bit too far of a commute.

Whats 38th street area like on the westside? I don't like East 38th. Except maybe towards the fartherst part of the county, but that is too far.

I'm comfortable with Washington St (just west of Holt) on the westside, because I spent a couple months there at a friends house. Basically, I'm not too nerving.

Housing price is a big factory, and I would also like a clean and safe community.

My thought - the area around 10th and Post is superior to anything on the westside along Washington Street inside the 465 loop.

Regardless, I have family in the 38th/Kessler area. It is a nice enough area. West 38th Street has a bad rep on this forum, I've never had a problem or felt I was in danger over there.

East 38th area can get very very expensive as housing goes especially as you branch out from say Kessler West of Michigan Road and heading north. The area does get a bad rap but there are some nice exclusive communities in there as well as solid middle class neighborhoods and some nice mansions. Unless you live over there or want to be adventurous, you'll never leave the main thoroughfares and actually get into the communities out there.

You will not find anything on the NW side that's not on the south side. They may be a difference in mom and pops but other than that, whatever you can find on the south side, you'll find on the north side and vice versa. In all honesty, there isn't anything one side has the other side doesn't. The city is pretty balanced in that regard. There is a price difference in housing between the south side and the north side as the north side is more expensive. The East side is probably the cheapest as far as housing.

From my experience and living on every side of the city, the most bang for your buck as far as housing, amenities, etc. is the south side as long as you do not depend on public transportation.
