I have heard that plans are in the works for this but so far have seen no construction work downtown! What is going on with this commuter rail system does anyone know?

Still talking. The most likely scenario is the northeast line from Fishers/Noblesville to downtown running along the old Nickel Plate line. This would initially involve, however, the use of diesel powered trains like the Metra ones in Chicago. Over time, there would be double-tracking and a move to electric-powered light rail. None of this is certain, and I expect to there to be a bitter public debate.

money, money, money. And the issue of not in my backyard. And the issue of where are the people and then where are their jobs.

1. No money.
2. Very little non controversial space.
3. Indy is incredibley spread out. So you bring the people downtown, what if their jobs are elsewhere?

I would love to see a commuter service that would connect the suburbs.Indianapoils is definetly spread out Indianapolis is 382 square miles. Which isnt that much smaller than Los Angeles.

We're also spread out like Atlanta, which has the MARTA trains (granted, no suburban connections). I think we could have a well-functioning system here if the stations are well located, and the IndyGo bus service is set up to connect to-and-from those stations. Still, we'll never have anything as extenstive as what they have in NY or DC. Indy will always be car-dependent to a degree.

Yeah I totally agree with the car dependent thing I know Obama and his administration are funding high speed rail finally in Indianapolis. I am hoping that they go to the electric trains since they cost less to operate. They should have one that goes from downtown to the airport too! Thanks for the input!
