And bear in mind, there are any number of Gay people who are not friendly to other Gay people. I included!

I agree. One of the best things about modern times is that gay people no longer have to meet in sleazy out of the way places. Indianapolis seems like a big friendly small town that has grown large enough to embrace all kinds of diversity.

Also, Gay people do not share a uniform lifestyle. Gays have as many different styles of living as Straight people. Surfers of any persuasion would not satisfy their lifestyles in either Indy or Louisville ! Otherwise, I think you'll do OK either place.

OH, I see this in an old post. I wonder if the OP ever moved ...

Indianapolis is not a "big small town." It is the hub of cultural, intellectual, economic, commercial and political activity in the 15th largest state in the USA. In fact, the greater Indianapolis area is the only thing keeping Indiana relevant on any level.

I know you probably weren't meaning to bash the city by calling it a big small town, I just disagree with that assessment. I think it is too diminutive for a city that is chronically underrated and overlooked despite it's many advantages and bright points.

I've lived in Louisville and lived in Fort Wayne, IN but visit Indy alot. IMO, the neighborhoods in Louisville are very nice...more attitude. But the same can go for Indy. Now for gay friendlyness, I would have to favor Indy. In Louisville you have to go hide at the gay bars such as connections(which I love to death). In Indy, I get the impression that no one gives a poop what you are and what you do. As long as you are human and nice then lets mingle. I didn't get that vibe in Louisville.

It's hard to judge a place based on the gay-friendly urban neighborhoods, because every reasonably sized city has at least a few of those. The real test of a city's openness is how well it plays out in the more mundane suburban places. A couple years ago I saw a gay couple holding hands and walking around at Castleton Mall--it was a male couple too, which kinda surprised me because I'd think males would have to take a little more flack than females. And I've seen female couples showing affection at the Airport and, during one of my rare visits, at Greenwood Park Mall. Granted, these all could have been isolated instances, but I'd imagine these people had tested the waters before and felt comfortable enough not to hide the fact that they were couples.
