Family and friends staying home and talking with each other for a change might be the next big improvement in our lives.
You don't sign up directly, but you sign up via "pods" which you can either host yourself or join someone elses pod. These pods can interact with each other.
If you host your own pod, you have ultimate control over what information you send out. I think this will become preferable over facebook's questionable privacy decisions.

The OP is asking a fair question. Social networking allows people from all walks of life to connect. I know some people find the whole global village thing intimidating but it's here to stay, for better or worse. Furthermore, from a marketing standpoint businesses and consumers absolutely should stay on top of what the next big social network might be.
