Because you are a bit more informed than the general public. Although variations have always been around, the Patriot Act, TSA, and Homeland Security have become larger threats to freedom in the U.S. than many of our supposed "enemies." Government isn't about freedom anyway. Have you ever run across a government at any level, when given power, say "We don't want this power. Go do what you want. Knock yerself out and have fun."?
I would suspect because we all know the government violates the privacy of we the citizens and Congress allows it to continue. The news would be if we the citizens were to require Congress to change the legality of the process.
I just opened my mail and found all of the "privacy rights" notices required by the government. There is a huge change from where government was before 9/11 and a few days after. Looking at those notices today, the words quaint and duplicitous sprang to mind.
Aw, you just reminded me of one of my favorite usenet debating partners who always had a parenthetical (evil) next to his name. Nobody dares to mention evil anymore as they are so frightened of it.
