"Verizon Communications should be able to block its broadband customers from going to websites that refuse to pay the provider to deliver their traffic"

Verizon argues it should be able to block websites - Computerworld

I can't even comprehend the idiocy required to think that they could implement this. Web hosts pay for bandwidth to offer their sites, customers pay their ISP for internet access, along comes Verizon to jump in the middle for what basically amounts to a shipping fee for a website so Verizon customers can access it.

Basciclly some want service from others for free like always. they can still have their sites just not thru verzon services from what I see. You can then buy form anther provider;plain and simple. If Verizon provide no service then why would it matter really ;its just a choice of what you buy.No different than cable or other TV service.Youcould just as easily charge to allow Verizon customers to view your site .

I'll show you the bills for my server and you tell me how free it is. I'm already paying for a server which is no different than the computer you are sitting in front of. Part of the bill I pay is for bandwidth just like you pay Verizon for bandwidth.

If you want an analogy if this was a phone Verizon wants to charge me so that you can make a call to me. I've already paid for my phone, I've paid for both incoming and outgoing calls. Verizon isn't providing a service to me, they are providing a service to their customers.

Who the hell comes up with all this crap at Verizon? Unbelievable!

So eventually what will happen? If some site does not pay Verizon to deliver, will the cost revert back to the user? Will the user get a pop-up that says something like.... "There is a charge for access to this website. Click on accept the charges or click on cancel." Is this what they want?

They aren't going to do that because it would **** off their customers, they'll lay the blame on the site owner and many people may not understand that site has already paid the costs of delivering the service. This is just an easy way for them to generate revenue and hiding those costs to the consumer who will ultimately pay for it.

Frankly I'm not sure how they would do this anyway. This site for example depends on ad revenue, you have increased costs for both the site and Google since Google would have to pay to get their ads delivered. That brings up another interesting question becsue if they aren't delivering the ads then it could be considered interfering with a contract.
