I find it difficult to believe that anyone is surprised. Google's arrogant and intrusive behavior is nothing new.

Did you read the article? Or any article?

They are scanning to make sure no malware is trying to manipulate Chrome and cause it to do things on the back end you may not be aware. It doesn't scan your personal information to send it to Google or anything of that nature.

Im sorry... I guess I was trying to help those using Chrome.. (We have heard alot of bad things about it and google (Google mostly))

It still scans and reports back all the software on your computer. Supposedly it's looking for buggy extensions, but doesn't stop its scan at at that. I turned the scanning off. Also, the program uses a fair amount of CPU when it's running. That's how I found it and learned about it. (process explorer etc.)

You can easily turn it off. I did.

Stop Google Chrome from Running in the Background on Windows

This is not to be confused with google update service. You can turn that off through services.msc or keep it from loading in the first place with msconfig.
