Hi, CD Colleagues

I am putting together a website for a dog rescue group and went to list it at dmoz so search engines could more easily find it.

Dmoz no longer seems to exist.

Is there a new site to list new websites so the search engines find them quickly?
I'll "suggest a site" to Google, Yahoo, etc.

I'm low tech so thanks lots for your help!

There is no equivalent that I'm aware of. 10 or 15 years ago that was pretty important for SEO but it became meaningless. You don't have to worry about Google and other SE's finding your site. Try google search console, Bing has similar tools. That can give you a lot of insight into what is indexed, errors and even suggestions on how to improve your site. Keep in mind even if you have pages indexed they may take while to start appearing for new site.

What is important today is content first and foremost followed by the page title. If you have good content all else will follow and that's not to say other things should be ignored either. There is an enormous array of things that will be used to rank your site and only the Google engineers could tell you exactly what they are are and how they are weighted. Us mere mortals are left to take educated guesses.

Thanks, TheCoalMan

I'll check out Google search console and see what Bing, etc, has to offer re SEO.

Too bad about Dmoz - listing with them was so easy. But it's good to know searching out a replacement would be time wasted since there isn't one.

Content for the rescue site is good. I"ll pay attention to page titles.

Thanks for taking the time to tell me all this!

Go to webmaster.google.com and add the site and follow the instructions to prove ownership.

Bing
https://www.bing.com/toolbox/submit-site-url

You can find out if google has crawled you yet by entering the following in a google search box (without the quotes) “site:myurl.com”

You will get a return hit for every page that has been crawled.

That may not yield all results of what was crawled especially for new sites. You can check what has been crawled by clicking:

Domain property(only one will be listed in this case) >> Under crawl on the left click crawl stats

That will have graph on how many pages Google crawled. Under Google index on the left click Index status and that will give you list of pages they have indexed.
