Some years ago, I went to B&N to search for a possible book about Google - a "Google for Dummies" type book. I never did find one. Then, some time later, I found "Firefox for Dummies". This is a great book for -- well, dummies like myself. Now I am wondering why there is no such book to explain the mysterious Google. Or, is there and I just have not found it. B&N sales persons tell me there is no such book that they can find. It could save a lot of asking what Google is doing in my computer. It seems everything is a deep, dark mystery.

Is there a book about Google anywhere? I don't mean about the company and its operations. I mean one that can explain how it works on the internet - a book like Firefox for Dummies.

Because Google itself is just a Search Engine at its core. It's not "doing anything" to your computer.

^ Yes, it is a search engine, what else would you need to know? Just plug in your question or topic & get a million answers.

I have been doing that over time. Maybe just not identifying it as Google doing it. And, no, Peregrine, I am not saying it is doing anything bad or wrong. I am saying I want to understand the part Google plays on the Internet that I engage with. After reading Firefox for Dummies, I was much wiser about what Firefox does behind (and upfront of) the scenes.

If you are looking for something just covering the Google Search engine, then this might work:

https://www.amazon.com/Google-Power-.../dp/1449311563

If needing something on Google's full suite of apps, (Docs, Sheets, Cloud, Gmail, etc) then these might work:

https://www.amazon.com/Google-Apps-D...dp/0470189584/
https://www.amazon.com/Suite-Dummies...dp/111974217X/

FWIW I've not read any. Just found these with a quick....wait for it.....Google search ;-)

Do you mean this in the sense of 'Why is Google [Chrome/Search] the default on my computer?' or in the sense of 'What is Google's software product running on my computer's CPU and memory?'

The answers will be very different depending on which perspective we draw from.
My short answer to the topic, Google for Dummies?: Yes.

On windows 10, Bing is the default search engine, or at least it was on the copy of Windows I just installed on a computer last week.

However, the name of the book should be Google (search) IS FOR Dummies.

I stopped using Google for searches many moons ago.

However google is a lot more than a search engine. My phone is a google; but highly modified so that many of the features such as tracking are turned off, except for those I allow (maps when needed).
