Personally, I have never used Chrome so I'd be the last person to comment.
If you need to use a browser based on Chrome's engine, try either Brave or SRware Iron.
These two offer better security than Chrome while also respecting your privacy and personal data which is something Chrome doesn't (frankly because that is how they make money).

And yet...
Yes, it's legit. Yes, it works. The article Turco linked explains it very well. I don't use it at home. I have recommended the Web Of Trust browser plugin for people before. Does a very similar thing.

Sloppy editing mishap. I meant to say I don't use Chrome but of course I have used it many a times but not really as a daily browser at home. I only use it to test or compare, mainly to support/learn (but you probably already knew that).

I really liked WOT and also recommended it to people but it also does slow things down a bit (they all do actually but WOT is more noticeable imh) and it can also have infrequent glitches with site display.
I started recommending AVG's Safe Browser add-on instead (if AVG app wasn't already installed).

Still, it is a Chrome (browser) feature, and if you are using Chrome, it'd make sense to see that.
I just got asked this yesterday and I said no. #1 reason being I am confident in my ability to not get infected from a website. This is the main thing it stops, opening bad actor links from emails or when you accidentally type in a website that might be phishy it will stop you.
I've got this thing that's far more useful: common sense. But for the not so savvy, any thing helps. If my mother in law used Gmail, I'd tell her to do this.
Also got an article in my news feed about it just yesterday.
