So, my son got so far this time as to get me to download the app and...
I got as far as the 'do you want zoom poking into your download file screen?
Like any sensible person I said NO! and then they closed up.
So, am I completely over-blowing things?
Does access to the dl file mean something benign?

Potentially.
You likely just downloaded the installer. So when you run it - it will download the rest of the application. To do so, it will need your permission for access to your Downloads folder so it can actually save/run those files.
This is just a precautionary thing. Thus - if you see this message pop up out of the blue - then you can be alerted that something is trying to install/download something. Since you initialized this - you should be fine.
If you were truly concerned with privacy and security, you wouldn't be downloading zoom in the first place.
Oh stop... Just can't help yourself, can you? OP wasn't asking about privacy.
And Zoom's privacy policy is actually pretty good for the end user. Unlike Facebook, you are NOT the product.
I understand that but how YOU phrase it isn't what/how zoom said it.
So... just another example of poor communication?
Thanks
Well... maybe it would help if you provided what it said..?
I'm guessing they didn't ask "'do you want zoom poking into your download file screen?" as you had indicated...?
