It is exactly what I have wanted to accomplish.

I will try it out for a few days to see if it is performing the way that I hope, but it sounds like it will. Thanks.

You know, I would really like to be more informed on the ins and outs of computer technology and have asked many people (3 of my sons are engineers - one with a Masters in Computer engineering.

) what the difference between POP3 and IMAP is, and you are the first person to explain it to me in 25 words or less!

I'm having the EXACT same problem due to MS Office / Outlook 2003 crapping out on me a month ago and now I can't access ANY of my old emails from my host provider

IMAP accounts are where its at. Being able to store messages on the server and locally = major win.

My work e-mail is set up like this, and its beautiful.

Also OP, gmail allows you to import other POP3 and IMAP accounts into its webclient, so if you want it to be all web based, you can. Its really quite useful.

I've had GMail for a few months and have seen very little spam - maybe once every one or two months I'll see one item that is spam.

Okay, then what you need is to get all your email in an online environment. Gmail can do that.

Set up your gmail account. Go to Settings. Click on Account. Where it says "Get mail from other accounts:" Click on Add another mail account

You'll then be able to have all your charter.net email delivered to your gmail account and accessible online. Here's more information:

When you're accustomed to using an email client, it's hard to give it up. I held onto using Eudora until about 3 years ago. Now I prefer my hosted Gmail account.

That's true. Then again I never really cared for Outlook. Especially having to use it at work on Mac. Anything Microsoft on Mac inherently sucks.

I've historically retired my email accounts in terms of using them for general email purposes, keeping them only for signing up for stuff and letting them be the spam magnets that made me quit using them regularly in the first place (including a Yahoo account I've had since ca. 1997 and still gets spammed to death). These I log into only to keep active and to confirm a registration or something like that. But with Gmail I've had it for three years now and have no such problems. One spam email might make it through the filters every two or three months. Hardly a problem.
