What is your experience with Target Date Retirement funds?

My retirement account is currently in dividend stocks (no bonds). However, I'd like to put part of my portfolio on a "set it and forget about it" path.

They are in theory better then most folks will do on their own ..

but: they dont lend themselves well to dollar cost averaging because as time goes on markets generally go higher buying fewer shares with each years purchases while at the same time a target fund is cutting back its stock allocations creating a portfolio that may be more conservative then you wanted.

they only really work well too when its not clouded by other investments you have in addition to the target fund which throw the mix off.
