fidelity is better if you want the biggest choice of managed funds and brokerage services. vanguard is good if you want low cost indexing.

when it comes to their managed funds at vanguard you are really limited to windsor, wellington and wellsley.. those are the three top.

For simplicity and better performance, less managed funds can actually be a good thing....

Can't go wrong with Fidelity, Vanguard, T Rowe Price, hell Schwab has quite a stable of cheap funds too.

Why are you limited to those three? They have dozens of actively managed funds, some like VDIGX are very highly rated.

not in a down market though. indexe funds work better in rising markets but they can be pretty wild rides in down markets

I don't market time, and I know there will be fluctuations in the day to day stock market so it doesn't matter to long term investors if index funds "work better in rising markets" (which is funny because no one can predict when markets will rise and fall).

All I know is that I can't pick the managed funds that will win out over time over their respected index benchmarks...If I did, I'd be making 7 figures on Wall St....

Slow and steady as she goes for me....
