ShoreBank, the company I represent, has a High Yield Online Savings Account with a competitive interest rate of 3.50%. With 2.2 billion dollars in assets and a 35 year history, this bank's reputation speaks for itself. It's a great account, but we also offer you the benefit of knowing that while your money is growing, it's going to fund profitable, environmentally sound, and socially responsible projects. Check out all the information on the High Yield Online Savings Account at ShoreBank -- Let's change the world

Wow, IndyMac, and Countrywide, red lights should've been going off if they were so desperate for capital that they were offering such high rates. WaMu was offering 5% 1yr CD up until recently, too. Just saying.

I would suggest HSBC, or Capital One, Emigrant Direct gives good rates too, but they may not be as safe as the other two. Clearly none is all that safe like 99.9%+, but at the same time they are not so large that the FDIC would have a hard time finding a taker for the deposits if necessary.

Don't put more than $100k at any one bank.

This thread is over a year old. I decided to go with Ing Direct and have been happy with them since. I particularly like that you can create multiple sub-accounts within minutes.

For high yield online savings accounts, I went with venturebankdirect.com. They are offering 3.8% APY with no minimum balance.

I forgot to add that I am using high yield savings account from HSBC. Besides high interest rate, they also offer very convenient service.

Don't bother going to ING Direct. CDs and savings is 1.5%.

Good luck!
I read the article and can not agree with some points. Author says that banks provide high yield savings accounts only to large and valuable customers. This used to the case 2-3 years ago, but today the situation is dramatically different: this type of account became accessible to everybody and anyone can open it very easily without further procedures.
