I have an old 401k that has a bunch of different mutual funds, as well as company stocks vested. I left the company 6.5 years ago when the balance was $39,000. The current balance is a little over $73,000 (no contributions since I left of course. It's with Vanguard).

The question is whether I should roll it over to a traditional and a Roth IRA (a portion of the account has after tax funds) or just leave it be, since it's done relatively well so far?

Any thoughts will be appreciated?

Just roll it to a traditional IRA. You can slowly switch it to a Roth over time and lower your taxable income if that is what you choose.

It appears the old 401k has both pre and post tax monies so they need for two account would be at rollover time

Where do you get that information from his post? I don't see it.

Roll over the post-tax portion to a Roth IRA.

You cannot roll over pretax 401k dollars to a Roth IRA. You must roll it over to a traditional IRA... then do a Roth conversion if it makes sense (depending on your taxes).

Oh ok, so OP has some in a 401k and some in a Roth 401k. Yeah, then roll each over into their respective IRA equivalents. If you want it all in a Roth it would be better to do it over time and lower your tax burden. this of course assumes it would likely push you into a higher tax bracket. If the amount does not it doesn't matter when you convert.

Did you not like the answers you received when you asked this exact same question in April?

my question:

1. should i just leave this alone?
2. should i "roll" this over to my current 401k?

both are with vanguard. 98% in stocks. 2% bonds. (12.7% in employer stocks)

Hah!
Had totally forgotten about that thread. Thanks.
Re-reading the responses there, their quality is so much better than what I'm seeing here......where the concentration seems to be on pointing out spelling errors, and gotcha responses.

Thanks!
