Im thinking about opening a custodial brokerage account with schwab for my child. Im going to buy SWTSX which is a total market index fund with a low .03% expense ratio or SWPPX S&P 500 index with .02% expense ratio.

I'm thinking of transferring $50 a month. So by the time their 20-25 they'll have a nice little nest egg.

My question is other than one of these simple index fund what growth stocks or growth etfs do you suggest? or should i just stick with the simple index and maybe throw one or two blue chips like walmart & disney in there?

Thanks,

We, in addition to the MFs, bought a handful of stocks. (1985-2006). A couple were 10x, IIRC.
I made the mistake in not watching the gains & losses for our minor's tax purposes.
Our' minor also had a remainder after college (we also took out loans for college) which he used as a partial down payment on his home. He had a FICO school close to 820 because of his bank, brokerage, payment history on student loans.
I have no suggestions on any picks of MF or stocks.

Good idea. You did not mention age but when your child has earned income I would use a ROTH wrapper for the investments as earning permit.
