There is a way to search Treasury to see if there are any bonds in deceased's name or living people who misplaced them. Maybe you'll hit the jackpot.

It's a series EE bond, was purchased for $25 in 1987 and is worth about $104 as of this month.

In the small world department: it has my dad's name as the "to", but has my SS number on it, and it's noted to be a gift. Who purchased this savings bond, I have no idea.

Back in the 80s when I was still working I bought the $200 EE bonds for $100, today they are each worth $414.72, and have about $20K of matured bonds in my desk drawer.

Your E bond may be worth more I still have this one, they all mature after 30 years.
E $25 05/1979 05/2009 $18.75 $90.58 $109.33

I entered the info on Treasury.gov for the specific EE bond. As of 2017 it is no longer earning interest since the bond fully matured after 30 years. It's worth not quite $104.00
