I think this one has scared everyone too much for people to shrug it off and get back in any time soon. The speculators and pros might have at it, but the bulk of the market is built of the backs of individual investors with non-Wall Street jobs. This will have everyone gun shy for quite a while.

I think it depends more on what Congress does as regulations are concerned. They're going to need some finance and economics classes. Quick.

October will be the big bloody month, like it always is. Then the market will start to stabilize in November.

The election should help ... mostly psychologically but it will be an important factor nonetheless.

Then we're looking at a slow climb with an eventual bull market.

History shows upswings are slow to moderate..some speculation but tempered so they have a gradual rise with a few bull market days.
Selloffs turn into panic selling which are ruled by emotions and non-trust so they tend to have a steep fall.

I think the recovery will begin with a sharp rally, and then moderate, with ups and downs. It depends upon circumstances. If world leaders come upon something that suddenly makes investors feel better about things, or if a large bank suddenly lets on that they have a handle on their balance sheet, then it is more likely that there will be a sharp rally. Of course, the trick is in the timing. There can be sharp rallies on the way down too.

Quickly or not, it's the re-tests that are killers. Then the second re-test! They're sometimes necessary but they're killers.

True! It never goes straight up, there are always nice advances and then scary retreats. You just don't want those retreats to be deeper than the advances...because that means it's going lower - not higher.
