After serving as an openly gay member of the Johnson County Board of Supervisors for more than five years, Janelle Rettig says when she mentioned some of the travel bans being discussed in other states at a Wednesday work session, there was no debate, other supervisors immediately agreed, " You know it's symbolic to a degree, but we do go to conferences, I don't know how many people this will impact, but I think it's important for the greater community to say this is unacceptable.
Rettig says she's anxious to see if the University of Iowa may follow suit. The Hawkeyes and UNI both have athletes involved in events surrounding the NCAA Championships this weekend in Indianapolis. Panther Seth Tuttle is part of an All Star game and Iowa's Melissa Dixon is taking part in the three-point championship. Neither university has disclosed any plans to restrict travel or spending in Indiana thus far.
Rettig says as Iowa marks six years since same sex marriage became legal this Friday, it's disappointing that lawmakers in Des Moines have considered a similar "Religious Freedom" bill to the one now sparking controversy in Indiana and she fears one day it could still pass, " I'm just sick and tired of the debate and please just let us live our lives and stop coming up with more convoluted legislation to discriminate against us. You lost, it's over and you might as well move on."

If the basis for "...just let us live our lives...", involves the desire to have protection to discriminate against any group of people for any reason, what exactly is the basis for a moral justification that such discrimination should be codified into law?

I am completely against the law in Indiana but I don't think travel should be restricted by Univ. of Iowa.

Yeah, that reminds me of the U of I's policy not to schedule teams that use Native American mascots, yet still they still have to play conference mate Illinois (yeah, they've since retired their Chief, but still use the nickname Fighting Illini).
I'm not against protesting the decision, but boycotting traveling to Indiana is just asinine.

I've heard lots of people talking about how Indiana's Religious Freedom Law allows businesses to discriminate against groups of people, particularly homosexuals.

Do they need the ban? Since Illinois has a religious freedom law passed years ago, they are already effectively blocked off from the east.

The Johnson County Board of Supervisors will not put a travel ban on county travel to Indiana in response to the state’s changes to their controversial religious freedom law.
At a Tuesday meeting of the elected officials and department head, Chairperson Pat Harney told the group that there will be no travel ban to Indiana for county business.
After the meeting, Harney said the ban to Indiana was a possibility, but that “the changes they have made to their law is more in line to our feelings on the matter, so we don’t feel the ban is necessary.”
On April 9, the supervisors passed a resolution supporting federal legislation that would “protect all people from discrimination based on age, color, creed, disability, gender identity, marital status, national origin, race, religion, sex or sexual orientation.”
The county also issued a travel advisory saying county employees “concerned about their safety or ability to travel free from discrimination should discuss the matter with their department head or elected official.”
The advisory also stated supervisors could prohibit “the use of public funds” to areas with such discrimination practices in the future.
