I have a niece that will be attending college in Ames this fall for four years. She bought a small home there to have residence. Currently, she lives here in New England and will be buying a used car for around $15K in her home state. She'll want to register and insure it in Iowa. Does anyone know the process and costs involved there? She's trying to figure everything into her budget. So I'm hoping someone from Iowa can shed light on this for her. Thanks

For reference: Ames is in Story County.

Most vehicle registrations are based on the weight and list price of the vehicle and will take a fee drop when the vehicle is 8, 10, and 12 years old.

To find out what year your vehicle will take a drop see our vehicle rate drop chart (PDF). [see link above!]

Thank-you very much for your help. I'll forward the information to my niece, so hopefully all will go well for her.
