I am moving from the Chicago subs to the Quad cities this fall to attend Grad school at St. Ambrose in Davenport. I have no problem with being farther from campus. I am having a hard time figuring out where I want to live. Almost all of the Davenport apartment reviews I've read are terrible. I wouldn't mind living on the IL side. Safety and price are top priority. I know the IL side a little better since I graduated from Augustana a few years ago. Any suggestions for good rentals/apartments?

St. Ambrose is pretty much surrounded by houses, but they're prob'ly expensive to rent...On Washington st. near the corner with Locust st. there is a new Apt. complex that looks pretty decent.

Other than that, plenty of Augustana and Palmer students live all around central Dav....South of Locust has a rep for being a lil sketchy, But not really, that's where most of Plamers students live. Lots and lots of duplex & tri-plex houses in that area. And you're within walking distance of Harrison street bars.

Go to Bettendorf. At the very least, eastern Davenport.

I noticed I typed in Augustana instead of St. Ambrose..my bad.

And forget Bettendorf, why pay more when anywhere near St. Am. is safe.

Bettendorf is far more desirable that anywhere near St. Ambrose. Plus, when it snows, your streets in Bettendorf will be plowed well before those in Davenport.

I have been working in Davenport this week and cannot believe how many boarded up for sale commercial property exists along Brady Street, and I'm talking north of Kimberly. Chi-Chi's - gone (I know, long ago), Lone Star - gone, Rudy's - gone, the Chinese buffet restaurant on 42nd St. - gone, Wendy's (south of Kimberly) - gone, etc. I hope things improve there soon.

Bettendorf is more expensive and who cares about plowing when you can walk to class. Davenport not that far behind in plowing anyway. I live in Bettendorf, behind Old Chicago, and they don't plow any faster here than in Davenport.

I think I finally found a place. Brand new building in Bettendorf, called the Villas at Devils Glen. Looks very promising. Thanks for the info.

That same company is building a brand new apartment building near Palmer (not as suburban safe as east Bettendorf) that would be a heck of a lot closer to St. Ambrose. I believe they've very originally named it The Villas at Palmer.

If safety is concern, Bettendorf wins, hands down.

well, I did consider the villas at Palmer, met with the leasing agent and toured them. They are very nice. Then i came home and checked out Palmer's security website.

http://w3.palmer.edu/Security/list_results.asp

There was a homicide 2 blocks away a month or so ago, and another shooting a day before that. The website is littered with "shots fired" reports for the past 2 years. So I think Bettendorf may be the place for me.
