I try to say the same thing on the Memphis forum where I live now. I grew up in Los Angeles so it is always funny to me how people get about these bad neighborhoods when some of them would not be bad by Chicago, NYC, or Los Angeles standards. Also it is funny to me when they act like a neighborhood changing demographics over time is the end of the world when it happens in big cities all the time. I grew up in West Long Beach by Los angeles and my neighborhood went from White and Japanese, to Black, to Black/Filipino/Pacific Islander, and lastly to its current composition of mostly Mexican and Asian with very few Black left. Its just life.

The difference is that Memphis TN is, in fact dangerous, by FBI "standards", and the people in Mississippi are some of the most uneducated in the United States.

Those are not my "standards". it just happens to be the standard of "truth".

All crime is dangerous, whether LA-type, Detroit-type, Memphis-type or Jackson Mississippi type.

Since you are interested in data, check the Supplemental Poverty Measure in the US Census. You will find that the states with the highest poverty rates are California and New York. And it's not even close (California around 23%). Mississippi is about 15.5%, precisely the national average.

Comparing Mississippi in any cultural measurement to the state of New York is begging the issue and it fact insulting to anyone who is remotely familiar with American history. Next I guess someone is going to suggest the literacy rates and quality of public education are "precisely the national average".

Single "bits" of metrics , do not make a positive, functioning, progressive and fair-minded society.

Better than that, go drive around Mississippi and talk with people, fair enough ? You have not a grip ...yet.

Only someone FROM Mississippi could be this blind or biased. I would bet dollars to donuts, you're FROM Mississippi, thus are totally biased, or perhaps living in a blue funk or living in denial or in fantasyland.

Mississippi is still primitive when fairly compared to a HOST of other States in these great United States of America. That's not my fault..maybe it's more "yours" (collectively) and bring yourselves out of the relative "darkness" and fully into the blazing 21st Century.

Are there worse places or states ? maybe, but I haven't found one yet.

Just presenting facts. In the SPM, Mississippi's poverty rate is literally precisely the national average, regardless of your quotes above which presumably indicate sarcasm. You're free to be vitriolic in this forum but there is a place for facts and data also.

I'm so glad SOMEONE finally said that changing demographics is NOT a big deal AT ALL. I'm the only white person on my street and I live in RIDGELAND. The problem with people, including GG, is that they flee the city for the White racist found suburbs. So what if neighborhoods in South Jackson or wherever aren't ALL WHITE anymore. This isn't the 1960s fellas, it's 2013, and different races MINGLE! Which is the problem with Madisonites. No apartments, really? The town's mayor threw a FIT when Jackson State University announced they were opening a satellite campus there! She even went as far as to try and BLOCK them from coming!

Like other people have said on this post, Jackson is like any other city, it has it's bad parts and it has it's good parts! And so what if the neighborhood is majorly Black (or something else other than the BELOVED WHITE RACE)? So what? This is why so many people say Mississippi is stuck in the past.
