Having looked at your profile page, I think I can keep the Shortlist for Jackson really short.

North of Jackson is Madison, where Circle 7 Outfitters is sort of a Rich Man's LL Bean. You'll find Alden shoes (still handcrafted in America), and pretty-much the best outdoor gear available. Our sons go by there every time they're back in the South. http://www.circle7online.com/uploads...e/IMG_2120.jpg The building is in a nice rustic Alsace/Normandy/Aquitaine style, perfect for maintaining an outdoorsy mood - and on-theme, considering that the store's owner actually LIVES the globe-trotting outdoor adventurer's lifestyle (no 'effete aesthete', his day job is as a major contractor, doing big-scale construction with heavy equipment). Fine Outdoor Apparel - Circle Seven Outpost & Provisions - Madison, Mississippi And while guns are of no interest to us (we PAY people for that), I hear the gun room upstairs offers firearms of EPIC quality, for the hunters among the Superelite. Personally, I think that the 'Purdey Sporter' is an exceptional value, at $47,900.00. Then again, I'm basing this entirely upon my assessment of how good it would look, leaning, during a photo shoot, next to a twelve-thousand-Dollar picnic basket, against the side of one of these: http://images.fineartamerica.com/ima...mccullough.jpg

In the same building with Circle 7 is Beagle Bagel: bright, airy, lofty, and with a great range of spectacular deli offerings, if you're short on time: The Beagle Bagel Cafe - Jackson Mississippi Catering Frankly, even the Bagel Dough is too high on the Glycemic Index for me (Mississippians prefer foods heavy on the Glycemic Load - 'Sweet Tea', for example), but that's where I take people for a quick bite when we're in Madison. There are three other locations, I think, in the good parts of the Metro.

Far more to your liking will be MAMA HAMIL'S: Mama Hamil's I have my people take certain businessmen there, and afterwards, they're putty in my hands. It's very good - probably the definitive establishment of that sort - if 'Southern Home-style Cooking' is what you're after.

In Jackson-proper, I think you'll like the Old Capitol Building, and the New Capitol Building (both offer tours). The Old Capitol http://s3-media2.fl.yelpcdn.com/bpho...jh0BfqQ/ls.jpg is a very fine Federal-style structure, and (in my opinion) is worth the trip simply for viewing the recent restoration of the exterior's faux stonework (carefully-tinted stucco, actually). It truly looks like fine cut Limestone. And yes: we've sent stuccatori over there, to look-&-copy. The historic exhibits are probably interesting, too, for those less greedy and grabby than myself. Oh, and the building's got a beautiful cupola, and a bodacious stairway, leading up, up, up... http://www.nagelphotography.com/img/...99534150-3.jpg

The NEW Capitol is REALLY something. Electric lights had just been invented when this extravaganza was on the drawing boards, and this building is chock-full of amazing uses of the new technology. I particularly like the bronze cages outside, housing illuminated glass orbs, which are used as finials. "It's a light! It's a finial! Wait! It's BOTH! Amerika Goniff!" Mississippi State Capitol - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Lots of wonderful uses of amazing marbles inside, too. And there's probably a lot of interesting history, for those not distracted by the truly fabulous building. http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-jSIXNjM7FI...p-TGR+095e.jpg

The Boyd House Museum is a must for the Traditionalist. It's a classic example of the modest (but quite erudite and fine) homes built by the kindly Norse Protestants who settled the state. Also, it's an example of an URBAN FARM. The Boyd House: The Oaks House Museum - Jackson, Mississippi

In the same area as the Capitol(s) and the Boyd House is another place you'll love: Two Sisters Two Sisters' Kitchen is legendary. As a friend says, "It's like going to eat at your Baptist Mamaw's house after Church!"

And that's about it, for the Jackson area. Most of Rankin County is safe. Most of Madison County is safe (except for Canton, which is like a little Mogadishu). During the day, you're safe(ish) in Jackson's 39211 zipcode. At night, a person alone is safer lingering in Madison (http://s.lnimg.com/photo/poster_1920...48ea41d611.jpg shopping/eateries/cinema http://www.malco.com/cinemapix/94.jpg are mostly along Grandview Boulevard http://www.madisonthecity.com/cityby..._small_000.jpg ) or in Ridgeland's 'The Township' or 'Renaissance' developments. https://fbcdn-sphotos-h-a.akamaihd.n...35122435_o.jpg

(If that pic of the Malco Grandview looks familiar, it's because a World Premiere was held there for the film, 'The Help')

In case you're heading into Jackson at night with associates (and honey, you do not want to go alone), then maybe Babalu, in Fondren, would be a good choice: Babalu Looks like they've opened other locations in other cities. Quite a few restaurant groups have started in Jackson, and gone on to greater lucre in more lucrative markets.

And, predictably, there's a Ruth's Chris Steakhouse in Ridgeland's 'Renaissance', if you want pricey and ultra-traditional.

This person doesn't live in Mississippi nor is she funny. She tries. Bless her heart.

Thanks Grandview Gloria but I have no money right now for the high end stuff. I'll stick to the ordinary everyday stuff the average person does/buys around there.

Among other things, I just like to walk the streets when I go to a new place.

Well downtown Jackson is a great place to walk around, as well as Fondren!

Sorry but Jackson isn't really a "walking" city.

Of course it is, people are constantly walking the streets downtown exploring & taking photos. I work at the Marriott, so I would know!

You do realize she claims to still own land here and comes back from time to time, which is as valid a claim as anyone else has to the State. This has been pointed out to you before.

Your obsession with her says far more about you than what you are trying to say about her.

I have been here, off and on, for several months now and I have walked all over parts of the city. I see plenty of others doing it as well, for many reasons.

There are some dense urban areas of Jackson that are well suited to going for a stroll for pleasure or necessity. Madison, being a nice, but sterile example of urban sprawl is not very well suited for walking for reasons other than pleasure.

THANK YOU. I mean HECK Ridgeland has more walkers than freaking Madison! No one EVER walks in Madison, I've never seen anyone walking around Madison AT ALL. Ridgeland & Jackson are more walking cities put together than ALL of Madison the "City".
