Hello. Does anyone knows if the population of Jackson, MS has increased lately? I was thinking about the recent census records , and the number of hotels that are being build in the city.

Nevertheless, I hope that Jackson will have a stronger economy and more people someday. Have fun and faith in God.

Other than the Westin and Residence Inn at Eastover, what other mid to upper-end hotels have opened? These two hotels are the only ones I can remember opening in the past 10 years or so, that's pretty underwhelming for a city the size of Jackson. Perhaps you're thinking the new hotels in Ridgeland and Flowood are in Jackson?

I doubt the population has increased any, likely the decline continues.

Fondren has a new hotel opening up too.

I'm still not sure why so many people think in strict city limits terminology. Does it really matter? It's all the metro area to most outsiders.

New hotels are not a sign of population increase. The most recent census estimates show that Jackson has lost about 4,000 people from 2010 to 2016. Considering the growth of Rankin County I'd say it's likely that more people are leaving Hinds for Rankin, doesn't seem to be stopping any time soon.

Thinking in strictly city limits is a better way to diagnose the health of the business climate within Jackson. Considering the city doesn't even have a movie theater within the city limits it's probably worthy to count every new business they receive.

Word of advice, you're discussing this with someone who doesn't live in Mississippi and in the past has said they've never been to Jackson.

Sure it is, if you're comparing to suburbs in the metro regions. If comparing to other metro areas, you MUST compare by the entire metropolitan area.

No one who is familiar with Jackson area will say that the Jackson city limits are doing well.

Hinds County 2006:248,989 ; 2016: 241,229
Rankin County 2006: 134,132 ; 2016: 150,228
Madison County 2006:87,844 ; 2016: 105,114

Domestic Net Migration is even worse: 06-16 had a net gain of 203 residents. However, every year since 2013 had DNM ranging from -1100 to -1500.

According to Wikipedia, the highest recorded population of Jackson was 202,895 at the time of the 1980 Census, over 30 percent higher than in 1970. After 1980, people began moving into Madison and Rankin Counties in large numbers. Jackson’s population has declined since then. It is hard to believe Jackson had just over 22,000 people in 1920.
