Hi all, I am new to the boards and I have a quick question. My apologies if this has been asked before, I searched but did not find anything.

I'm going to be driving from Jackson to Dauphin Island, AL later in the week. Does anyone have a favorite route? The two most logical seem to be:

U.S. 49 to I-59 to U.S. 98 to I-65 to I-10 to AL 193

or

I-20 to U.S. 45 to I-65 to I-10 to AL 193

I'm going to be driving in the late afternoon, if that makes any difference. Thanks in advance!

Personally, we always travelled the first option you listed. Someone else may have something different to add but we found this route more timely. Just watch your speed after crossing the state line, around Wilmer and into Mobile, as this area was notorious for speed traps. Don't know if it is still that way now, though. As for your second option, Hwy 45 is through rural areas and will be slow going.

Hwy 49 to the coast then I-10 east crossing into Alabama - it's the second exit I think to DI - the sign point you to the Ferry which is at DI. - Enjoy

You are pretty much going the same route I will be going this weekend. I am going down to Orange Beach, AL for some relaxation and some down time. The best route to go is US 49 to Hattiesburg, get on US 98 to Mobile, it runs out at Interstate 65. Take 65 South to the I-10 east. On I-10 east get off on Dauphin Island Parkway going south. Take it all the way down to the island.

^^ Well I did end up trying to go that way. The Magellan had some kind of hiccup and, instead of going all the way to I-65, it directed me south through some nice neighborhoods of Mobile! I eventually arrived safely. It was funny in retrospect.

On the way back I went on I-10 'cause I wanted to eat lunch in Biloxi with my sister & her family, and I had a site visit to make in Gulfport.

Hope your trip goes well bornjacksonian.

Thank you I really did enjoy myself. We had to go on and leave from down there do to the weather getting worse. The water was not as colorful as I thought but overall I had a good time.

Well now someone can take Highway 49 down to the new 67 in Saucier and turn off on 10 in Biloxi/D-Iberville. Then, take the 188 East exit back to Highway 90 in Grand Bay and make the turn off a few blocks later. 188 will take you past The Bayou and Coden until you get to 193 South/DIP and then make the right and cross the big bridge.

I'm curious why my GPS and google suggest taking I-55 south to 12 east to 10 east? Is the speed limit higher on I-55 than on 49?

As for trying 2 take 45, I wouldn't do it b/c it turns into a LONG 2-lane til you get back 2 Mobile.
