Sad to say, but I've lived in Jacksonville since 1970 and in all that time that area has had a bad reputation as being dangerous to live in. I'd follow the safety tips offered here, and check the Sheriff's Office Crime Stats (under Sheriff's Office on coj.net). Their mapping information is very useful and shows crime rates for given periods of time within a half-mile of the address.

For example, I searched for just "Roanoke Blvd", the map basically centered there, and for the last 6 months in a 1/2 mile radius there were 5 assault/battery counts, 4 residential burglary charges, 2 robberies, 1 sexual battery, assorted theft/vandalism, but no murders.

serious crime, serious crime, is definitely a issue there.

Sherwood is a notoriously dangerous section of Northwest Jacksonville. Violent crime and drugs have severely infected the neighborhood for decades and sad to say, it may really go to hell because there's no commerce there..... I wouldn't suggest moving there AT ALL
Um,... why would you wait until AFTER you buy the house to ask about the neighborhood. So you bought a house without researching the area at all? Who did you entrust to pick this dream house and what have you done to them?!?!?

Depending on what time of day, it's not uncommon to see young men hanging out in the streets or on street corners. Yes, the neighborhood is working class but it doesn't take away from the fact that it's notoriously dangerous. An inner-city area can have nice pretty homes but still have violent crime issues
